What is dramaturgy?

I'm glad you asked!

Dramaturgy is context.  This has often been interpreted as providing access to facts which surround the structure, period, and events of the play.

Ideally, dramaturgy can be more than that.  In looking at its etymology, “context” denotes more than simply the construction of a text; it allows one “to weave together.”  Dramaturgy provides avenues to understanding a play on many different levels, allowing the audience to interweave a variety of possible perspectives into their own personal experiences of the performance.

In other words, dramaturgy isn’t intended to provide all of the answers; it is designed to help figure out which questions to ask.
