Thank you for visiting the dramaturgy page for Baylor University Department of Theatre Arts!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">What is dramaturgy? </span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">I'm glad you asked!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Dramaturgy is
context. This has often been interpreted
as providing access to facts which surround the structure, period, and events
of the play.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ideally, dramaturgy can be more
than that. In looking at its etymology, “context”
denotes more than simply the construction of a text; it allows one “to weave
together.” Dramaturgy provides avenues
to understanding a play on many different levels, allowing the audience to interweave a variety of possible perspectives into their own personal
experiences of the performance. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">In other
words, dramaturgy isn’t intended to provide all of the answers; it is designed
to help figure out which questions to ask.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
